Medical Dosimetrist



Shift: Day

Employment Status: Full-Time (.75 or greater)

Hours per Pay Period: 1.00 = 80 hours (Non-Exempt)

The Medical Dosimetrist is a member of the radiation oncology team who has knowledge of the overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology treatment machines and equipment, is cognizant of procedures commonly used in brachytherapy/radiation therapy and has the education and expertise necessary to generate radiation dose distributions and dose calculations under the direction of the Medical Physicist and Radiation Oncologist.

Essential Job Functions

• Supports and models behaviors consistent with the mission and philosophy of Billings Clinic and department/service.

• Coordinates treatment simulations and tumor localizations on dedicated devices, including CT, MRI, and PET.

• Performs or assists with CT simulations, including fabrication of patient immobilization devices.

• Designs treatment plans with a treatment planning system or by manual computation that will deliver a prescribed radiation dose according to the Radiation Oncologist's prescription. The design will also consider the physicians preferences for dose limiting structures.

• Documents all pertinent information in the patient’s record and verify the accuracy of all calculations using a system established by the Medical Physicist.

• Assists the radiation therapists with the implementation of the treatment plan including the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangement, and other treatment variables.

• As directed by the Medical Physicist, provides support in radiation protection, machine calibrations, and equipment quality assurance. Assists in dosimetry measurements utilizing ion chambers, TLDs, and film measurements.

• Familiarity with all equipment in the dosimetry work areas including function, emergency shutdown procedures, data backup, and usage.

• Assists with brachytherapy procedures, including coordination of procedures, assisting with the implantation of the applicators, taking and reviewing of all treatment planning images, designs and calculation of the treatment plans, and the implementation of the treatment plans.

• Participates in clinical research for the development and implementation of new techniques.

• Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development; meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements.

• Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency environmental, employee or patient safety standards relevant to job performance.

• Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

Minimum Qualifications


• Graduate of a JRCERT (Joint Review Committee in Radiological Technology) medical dosimetry program OR a Registered Radiation Therapy Technologist with completion of two (2) or more years on-the-job training in medical dosimetry under the supervision of Certified Medical Dosimetrist or Medical Physicist

Certifications and Licenses

• Current certification by the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board,(MDCB)

• CPR Certification as a Healthcare Provider

• Board eligible as defined by the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board (MDCB)within 18 months of employment.
