Overview

Tanaq Environmental, LLC. (Tanaq) delivers environmental engineering, investigation, consulting, and remediation services to local, state, and federal agencies in the areas of hazardous & toxic waste restoration, environmental compliance, emerging contaminants, and military munitions site management. Tanaq is a subsidiary of the St. George Tanaq Corporation, an Alaskan Native Corporation (ANC) committed to serving Federal customers while also giving back to the Alaskan native community and shareholders.

Position Summary

Tanaq is seeking a Project Environmental Scientist I to support geologic projects, hydrogeologic investigations, environmental restoration, and compliance projects for US Government and commercial clients with oversight from a Project Manager. This position will support remedial investigation, remedial design, and remedial actions for contaminated sites located throughout the US and require an understanding of environmental investigation and remediation concepts. This job requires the ability to monitor subcontractors to ensure performance of work in accordance with environmental laws, policies, and contractual requirements, and the oversight of in-house field crews conducting site investigations and remediation of soils, groundwater, surface water, and sediments at PFAS, petroleum- and hazardous-waste sites. This job may require, as part of a team, writing technical documents such as reports, decision documents, and studies as required by the contract.

This a hybrid remote work role based in the U.S. that requires an estimated travel of 75% or more annually in the United States depending on project requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the successful completion of environmental compliance and remediation projects, including field work, and preparation of planning documents, reports, designs, and contract documents.

  • Oversight of staff conducting work in support of environmental restoration projects including well drilling and installation, environmental investigations, and remediation efforts at various project locations.

  • Preparation of subcontractor scopes of work and specifications.

  • Coordination and interaction with homeowners and the public in support of clients.

  • Travel to potentially contaminated sites throughout the US to support a wide variety of field activities and contractor oversight.

  • Preparation of technical approaches and cost estimates in support of proposals for environmental restoration projects.

  • Solicitation, evaluation, and procurement of subcontractors for investigation or remediation projects.

  • Oversee contractors conducting site remediation field activities, including groundwater injections and removal actions.

  • Review subcontractor invoices and evaluate subcontractor performance in accordance with approved plans.

Requirements

Required Experience and Skills

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in environmental consulting or a similar role.

  • Minimum 3 of overseeing and implementing safety programs for field work.

  • Minimum of 1-2 years prior field experience working on environmental restoration projects and on-site leadership of field work.

  • Prior experience working on federal government projects preferred.

  • Experience with Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste (HTRW), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination, and other emerging contaminants, and environmental compliance preferred.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.

  • Organizational skills and ability to plan and manage multiple tasks.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team to execute multiple assignments at various locations, providing a consistently high level of quality and accuracy.

  • Professional demeanor with a positive, solution-seeking attitude, and personal responsibility.

  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.

  • Must be able to obtain clearance to access military bases and other federal government installations to perform job duties.

Education and Training

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, geology, hydrogeology, or related field from accredited institutions.

  • 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER training with the current annual 8-hour update is preferred; training may be provided for otherwise qualified applicants.

  • OSHA 30 Hour Construction certification is preferred; training may be provided for otherwise qualified applicants.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able and willing to travel to visit job sites, attend client meetings, and/or attend professional or technical conferences, and the ability to travel, typically 75% or more annually, in the United States.

  • Physically able, with or without accommodation, to work in outdoor environments with uneven terrain and variable outdoor conditions including heat, cold, dust, noise, chemicals, moisture, dryness, and vibration.

  • This position requires the ability to perform physical activities associated with field work, including walking long distances, climbing ladders, and carrying equipment. Bending, kneeling, stooping, and reaching are essential functions of the job.

  • Position requires frequent (more than 50% of workday) performance of repetitive bending & stooping, standing/walking, power gripping/squeezing (hand tools, levers, etc.), operation of vehicles, and lifting less than 25-50 pounds. Often (25-50% of workday) performing work with arms above shoulder level, and keyboard/mouse operations. Occasionally (10-25% of workday) performing repetitive fine hand movements and lifting 50-75 pounds. Rarely (less than 10% of workday), climbing stairs, using portable ladders, working in an environment of heavy, moving, dangerous equipment, and working in confined spaces.

  • Position will require wearing associated personal protective equipment, including, but not limited to safety glasses/goggles, gloves, safety shoes/boots, hard hats/safety helmets, hearing protection, and respirator.

  • Good near and far vision (corrected to 20/40) is necessary to accurately measure instruments, record data in field logs, and identify potential hazards in the field.

  • Must be able to work in a hybrid remote work arrangement with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and while working on a computer.
