Position Summary:At Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch, we count on our Behavior Specialists to support a trauma-informed environment while being primarily responsible for social, emotional, and behavioral interventions for the youth they serve. They provide interventions in and out of the classroom, before and after school, within the youth's home, school, and community-based on the needs of the youth and families driven by an individualized treatment plan. They serve as a positive role model and mentor to the youth they serve. A Behavior Specialist will have a heart and passion for working with youth who often come from hard places and have experienced complex trauma.   • This position can provide practicum and internship opportunities for students enrolled in a Master's degree program in social work, counseling, or related fields.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, Social Work, or a related field

  • In lieu of a bachelor's degree, a High School Diploma with two (2) years of professional experience providing direct services to emotionally disturbed youth will be considered.

  • Experience/Interest in working with youth with emotional and behavioral issues.

  • 21 years old or older

  • License to operate passenger vehicles and reliable means of transportation.

  • Knowledge of and ability to maintain professional therapeutic boundaries and confidentiality with youth and families.

  • Ability to relate and build rapport with youth therapeutically while serving as a positive role model for the youth.

  • Ability to work in cooperation and collaboration with the treatment team

  • Knowledge of behavior modification and age-appropriate child development

  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Display regular, predictable, and reliable attendance at work

  • Excellent active listening skills

  • Good computer skills

  • Demonstrate sound & ethical judgment and decision-making skills.

  • Willingness and ability to obtain certification in First Aid/CPR and Violence Intervention Prevention.

  • Criminal / Child Abuse Clearance: Must pass criminal record and child abuse registry background check as required by the State of Montana.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of experience working with youth in a similar setting or environment.


Hiring Range Salary$12.33 - $13.80 per hour depending on experience and education

About the OrganizationYellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch was founded in 1956 and welcomed the first boy to the ranch in 1957. Today Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch, a nonprofit organization, is trusted locally and nationally as a leader in the field of mental health care for children and their families.

Our Residential Treatment is located on a 410 acre, working farm and ranch located in Billings, MT. We offer a continuum of mental health services that include case management, youth mentoring, home/school-based programs and foster care in addition to residential treatment. We specialize in treating troubled youth who struggle with social, emotional, and behavioral disorders. We also have four Community Based Services locations in Livingston, Lewistown, Dillon, and Billings. With all of our locations we impact about 650 kids each day. And throughout our history, YBGR has impacted close to 10,000 youth and their families.
