SANDERS COUNTY WEED CONTROL DESK TECHNICIAN in PLAINS, Montana

Position: Weed Control Desk Technician 40 hours/week, Seasonal - Non-Exempt Department: Weed Control Position Open: Late March - September Salary: Starting rate of $18.00/hour, Depending on Experience Closing Date: Open Until Filled - 1st Review on May 20, 2024 Work Unit Overview: Full-Time Position, Seasonal, 40 hours per week. Seasonal position for the period mid-to-late March through September. All county departments must maintain an open and customer service-oriented environment, cooperate with other County departments and governmental entities, and keep accurate and timely records and information. Job Summary: The Desk Technician will perform various routine and complex tasks and duties at the Plains, MT Weed Department office. Periodically, this position may work on other job sites across the county. This individual is expected to provide customer information and sales/technical support as they serve customers as the primary counter person at the Weed Shop. Successful candidates are expected to support the functions of the Weed Department Supervisor, co-workers, and the public as part of their overall job duties. Essential Functions (Major Duties or Responsibilities): These duties are the essential functions and are not all-inclusive of all duties that the incumbent performs. - Must be able to receive and complete work assignments in an acceptable and timely manner; must be able to demonstrate proficiency using Quick Books, Excel Computer software, and EDDMapS. - Strong multi-tasking skills are essential elements to succeed in an environment of varying demands and work volumes; work independently, working well without supervision - Must be able to work extended hours/shifts, as required; be able to work in all types of outdoor weather conditions, if needed - Will function independently to provide information and technical support to the public - Experienced in identifying noxious and undesirable vegetation in assigned areas to determine what type of chemicals or equipment is necessary to remove or control them. This may also include assisting the public and other agencies with weed identification and advice on removal strategies. - Order, receive, inventory and sell pesticides and herbicides in accordance with work orders and sales record or log all sprayed areas in accordance with department policies. Review chemical labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for each product before application. Calculate mix ratios and compute how much spray is necessary for a given area. - Calibrate and perform light maintenance duties of all spray equipment according to established procedures and manufacturer specifications. Perform minor semi-skilled maintenance and repairs on spraying equipment, mowers and lawn maintenance equipment, department vehicles, and safety equipment. - Provide information, rental scheduling, materials and technical assistance to support the public in effective noxious weed management; answers the telephone, takes and distributes messages. - Ability to operate and become certified to utilize a forklift in order to load rental equipment and other county property into trucks without damaging equipment or customer vehicles. - Properly dispose of empty containers and rinse materials and maintain the appearance and cleanliness of the facility. - Operate specialized equipment and hand tools for cutting, gathering, and removing noxious weeds, including weed whackers, mowers, and related county equipment. - Loads and unloads equipment and chemicals within safety procedures. Uses and repairs safety equipment. I may be asked to perform roadside spraying through broad jet wide boom and hand-line systems. - Is observant for weather conditions, traffic, water and animals that may change spraying procedures. Changes in spraying procedures must be approved by the Weed Supervisor. - Greets the public in a friendly manner on the phone or in person. Answers the publics questions and/or routes to appropriate p rsonnel. Maintains professionalism by exercising tact and courtesy at all times. Instructs public in use of rental equipment, chemicals and other supplies. - Compile and submit activity reports, equipment logs, inspection reports, and other records to provide accurate, complete, and timely information. Non-Essential Functions: - Perform other duties as assigned including but not limited to managing special projects, attending meetings and conferences, providing backup for other staff, participating in training, etc. Physical Demands and Working Conditions: The demands and conditions described here are representative of those the employee must meet to perform the essential functions of the job. - Frequently required to stand, sit, write, read and use hands to handle or feel objects. - Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 40 to 50 pounds. Infrequently, the employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Use of team lift and forms of mechanized equipment aids are required based on task and weight situations. - Frequently the employee is required to wear a breathing apparatus when working with toxic chemicals. - Frequently works near moving or mechanical parts; with fumes or airborne particles; with toxic or caustic chemicals in outdoor weather conditions and with vibration. The employee occasionally works in extremely hot outdoor conditions with risk of electrical shock. - The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and the employee may be exposed to hazardous fumes or products. Supervision Exercised: List jobs reporting to the subject position and level of supervisory authority. This position may supervise one or more county employees. Education and Experience: - Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. - Valid State drivers license. - Ability to follow safety procedures. Ability to work various days and shifts. - The job requires one (1) year experience with chemicals including presticides/herbicides, preferred. Equivalencies include course work in agriculture or related fields, certification as a licensed pesticide applicator and one (1) year of experience in weed management operations, preferred. Training in some of these areas can be made available. Report any unsafe work practices immediately to the supervisor. - Report any incidents, near misses, injuries, or illnesses to the immediate supervisor. - Use the correct tools and equipment for the job, including the required safety equipment and protective clothing. - Develop a personal concern for health and safety -- for yourself and others, particularly new employees. - Read, understand, and comply with workplace health and safety policy, safe work practices, and procedures. - Co-operate with health and safety committee members and representatives. - Should an injury occur during the course of the workday, report to your supervisor and complete a written Report of the First Injury by the end of the work shift on the day the injury occurs. Failure to complete and submit a Report of First Injury during a work shift may result in progressive discipline being initiated.
