CITY OF POLSON Water Technician in POLSON, Montana

GENERAL PURPOSE Performs routine skilled utility work in the reading, repairing, installing water meters must perform strenuous physical labor, assists Public works. crew as needed. SUPERVISION RECEIVEDWorks under the general supervision of the Water and Sewer Superintendent. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESTraverses assigned routes and takes readings of meter dials; records reading on meter cards or inputs data into computing device to provide needed information for utility billing or other related action; notes any unusual changes in consumption, location or malfunctions such as leaks or damaged meters. Inspects meters and connections for defects, damage and unauthorized connection or use, rechecks readings as needed to determine abnormal consumption patterns and analyze possible causes for fluctuation or consumption. Maintains and repair of meters; replaces defective meters; tests meters for accuracy; connection and disconnection of customer service accounts.Position performs varied technical and physical labor duties requiring ability to accurately record numbers, handle uncooperative animals, climb basement stairs, dig trenches, operate hand tools and drive a vehicle reading 2000+ meters monthly. Position may work in adverse weather and in hazardous construction conditions requiring adherence to safety standards. Maintains assigned tools and equipment. PERIPHERAL DUTIESReads and records all City manual and remote water meters on a monthly bases; installs new meters or remotes, replaces and repairs meters as well as repairs, services. Responds to work orders for utility disconnections, reconnections, new orders, and other public works service requests, as assigned. Assists in the analysis and improvement of assigned routes.Being on call some weekends. Has cross training in many public work functions and may be assigned to assist other public work staff in non-meter assignments DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience: *Graduation from an high school or GED equivalent; and *Any equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: *Skilled computer knowledge; working knowledge of basic arithmetic; *Organized and self-motivated; *Establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors and the public; *Skilled in operating listed tools and equipment; and *Ability to perform and record arithmetic computations accurately and quickly; *Ability to accurately read and record data from various type of meter dials; *Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; *Ability to work in extreme weather; *Ability to establish successful working relationships; and *Ability to work with angry or difficult customers SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Able to troubleshoot problems on your own. Must retain a valid Montana driver?s license and practice safe driving standards. Understand computer related systems for usage of radio read technologies. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USEDAble to use computer devices, hand tools, calculator and cell phone. The employee is constantly required to stand, walk and use hands and fingers; handle, feel or operate objects, tools and controls. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb and/or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and talk and hear.The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
