State of Montana Clinic Nurse Practitioner in Warm Springs, Montana

This position is anAdvanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) and provides direct medical care and services to patients at Montana State Hospital facilities in a clinical orinfirmarysetting. This position provides clinical oversight of Registered Nurses (RN’s) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN’s) in performance of Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP) assigned orders. Direct Link to MT HB 702 Major Duties or Responsibilities: 1. Direct Patient Care 50% * Evaluates patients to assess medical diagnosis. * Plans and prescribes patient treatment and medication administration and management. * Assesses response to treatment and makes appropriate adjustments. * Evaluates patients for side effects and unintended consequences of treatment and attempts to address. * Consults with psychiatrists and other Licensed Healthcare Practitioners regarding patient treatment and care needs. * Consults with and refers to primary care physicians in the Hospital's medical clinic as indicated. 1. Unit and Hospital Treatment Team Functions 35% * Communicates assessed patient physical/medical needs and makes treatment recommendations to the treatment team. * Prescribes treatment and rehabilitation services to be provided by others in the organization. * Provides pertinent clinical information to aftercare providers through completion of the admission history and physical (H&P) clinical evaluation and documentation, consultation requests, and provision of other pertinent information relative to a diagnosis of a patient. * Refers patients to physicians or consultants as needed. * Collaborates with other members of unit treatment teams to develop a treatment program for patients who come under their care. * Completes documentation, writes reports, develops treatment plans, conducts evaluations as required by Hospital policies and state and federal regulations and standards. * Carries out on-call responsibilities, providing coverage for medical clinic and works in concert with the on-call psychiatric provider. 1. Treatment Team Responsibilities 10% * Consults and collaborates with the nursing staff on medical progress or problems of individual patients. * Promotes professional development and meets standards of licensure and accreditation. * Offers general assistance to patient’s family/visitors, and other authorized visitors to address direct patient care and to promote an understanding of patient care as a provider * Maintains confidentiality related to patient information and medical records to ensure the rights of hospitalized individuals. * Cooperates with other staff and demonstrates respect for other employees, which contributes to a positive and efficient working environment. * Complies with Department, Division, and Unit policy and/or direction and consults as needed or required with supervisors to obtain clarification or address concerns to ensure the provision of appropriate patient care and treatment. * Performs all work tasks in a proper and safe manner following established policies, general safety rules, and safe operating procedures. 1. Hospital Wide Peer Services 5% * Serves on hospital committees as assigned by the Medical Director or the Hospital Administrator. * Participates in, and provides for other staff, continuing education and training programs. * Participates, as a voting member in medical staff activities, providing input into hospital policy and patient care issues. * Consults with other professionals including physicians, APRN’s, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and attorneys as needed to make patient care decisions. Physical and Environmental Demands:The position primarily performs duties in a secure environment. The position is involved in the treatment of persons who pose unpredictable and physically aggressive behavior requiring staff intervention and possible risk of injury to staff. Employees in these positions may be expected to assist with patient crisis interventions. These positions are also involved in the evaluation and treatment of persons with histories of serious criminal acts. Training in hospital approved intervention techniques is required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Behaviors): Required for the first day of work: * Extensive and advanced knowledge of medical advanced practice nursing. * Understanding of individual and team approaches to treatment and therapy for mental health illness. * Knowledge of professional standards of practice for healthcare professionals in different disciplines, in medical clinic settings, and for the operation of a healthcare facility. * Effective interviewing and information gathering techniques. * Ability to effectively utilize knowledge and skills and apply them to practical assessment and treatment modalities for patients. * Ability to compose and provide information in the form of reports and complete clinical documentation. * Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing * Ability to analyze, assemble, and organize information. * Functionality in the use of communication technology. * Ability to operate personal computer and general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, including using spreadsheets, word processing, database, email, internet, and other computer programs. Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience): * Masters’ Degree from an accredited APRN program as an Advanced Practice Nurse. * Licensed as APRN in the State of Montana; prescriptive authority with assignment of DEA number. * Two years of experience providing patient care preferably as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
