State of Montana Infection Control Nurse in Warm Springs, Montana

Job Overview:The Infection Control Nurse is trained in infection prevention and control principles and is responsible for the surveillance, analysis, interpretation and reporting of hospital acquired infections; educating employees about infection prevention and control; and the development of hospital policies and procedures to insure rigorous infection prevention and control standards that meet Joint Commission, OSHA, Centers for Medicaid/Medicare Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other nationally recognized recommendations and requirements. Infection Control Oversight 80% * Performs, coordinates, and directs the process of surveillance to identify healthcare acquired infections and other adverse outcomes to ensure safe patient care. * Uses the electronic medical record and surveillance system, to review clinical and laboratory findings in assigned areas to identify infectious conditions that may require reporting or further action such as the implementation of precautions to prevent organism transmission. * Serves as content expert in all infection prevention and control matters in support of clinical staff, performance improvement teams and hospital committees. * Performs literature reviews to support performance improvement and practice changes. * Assesses potential infection prevention/control situations and recommends appropriate actions to ensure safe and quality patient care. * Conducts frequent rounds on patient units, patient areas, and ancillary departments to evaluate compliance with infection prevention and control practices, policies and regulatory agency requirements. * Develops and provides educational programs on infection prevention and control topics for staff at all levels to improve their infection prevention knowledge base and practice. * Conducts infection prevention and control-focused education during employee orientation. * Assists in assembling agenda, graphs and materials presented and distributed to the Infection Control Committee, performance improvement teams and others as requested. · Provides infection control insight to scenarios needing consultation. · Ensures dissemination of information through regular staff meetings. 1. Other Duties as Assigned 20% · Assists with tasks and assignments provided by senior and executive leadership. · Participates in team activities as directed. · Provides input and feedback to Hospital Administrator and/or Chief Operations Officer as directed. · Performs other duties as directed. * * Physical and Environmental Demands:Professional Clinical, Medical, and Nursing Services positions primarily work on treatment units and in a clinic setting. These positions are involved in the treatment of persons who pose unpredictable and physically aggressive behavior requiring staff intervention and possible risk of injury to staff. Employees in these positions may be expected to assist with patient crisis interventions. These positions are also involved in the evaluation and treatment of persons with histories of serious criminal acts. Training in hospital approved intervention techniques and Mental Health Professional Person Certification are required. Must be able to work flexible hours when the hospital needs to impart information to staff on several shifts, which may include evenings and weekends. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (Required for first day of work) * Strong working knowledge of patient care practices, microbiology, asepsis, disinfection and sterilization practices, adult education principles, infectious disease , disease transmission, surveillance techniques, performance measurement and improvement principles, licensing standards and regulations. * Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to coach and motivate others to improve their knowledge and skills. * Ability to collaboratively work in a multifunctional team and multi labor union environment. * Ability to identify problems and research to develop and implement solutions. * Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. * Ability to deal effectively with administrative detail and confidential material. * Ability to maintain effective working relationships with direct reports, peers, other agencies, internal/external stakeholders and the public. * Able to work effectively in a complex, and quickly changing environment. * Adept at planning and prioritizing work to meet commitments aligned with organizational goals. * Proven ability to make reasoned and timely decisions based on careful review and analysis of available information. * Action-oriented and eager to embrace new opportunities and challenges with a sense of urgency, high energy, and enthusiasm. * Skilled in public speaking. * Adept at learning quickly, applying insights from past efforts to new situations. * Ability to operate a personal computer and general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, including using spreadsheets, word processing, database, email, internet, and other computer programs. Minimum qualifications(Education and Experience): * Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred. * Master degree in Public Health preferred. * 3-years relevant experience in an acute psychiatric hospital or similar environment required. * Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Montana. * Or ability to transfer RN licensure from another state prior to first day. * 2-year supervisory experience preferred. * Must have or obtain Associate-Infection Prevention Control (a-IPC) certification within 1 year of hire. * Must have or obtain Certification in Infection Control (CIC) within 3 years of hire.
