Job Overview: Montana State Hospital provides acute care psychiatric inpatient treatment for adults with serious mental illness.* This position is responsible for treating and prescribing physical medical care to patients as referred in a Clinic Setting. Provides direct patient care and collaborates as a provider and treatment team member in the provision of unit specific treatment health care for psychiatric patients. Direct Link to MT HB 702 Major Duties or Responsibilities: 1. Primary Medical Care: 90% * Provides primary medical care to patients of Montana State Hospital. Care is provided during scheduled clinic times, rounds on clinical units, unscheduled visits to units, and during on-call after hours. * Performs initial (within 24 hours of admission) and yearly physical examinations of extended care patients. * Evaluation and treatment of patients with complex medical and psychiatric problems. * Provides expert medical consultation to attending psychiatrists and nursing staff. * Provides after hours on-call primary medical coverage forMontanaStateHospital patients.* * Completes documentation, writes reports, conducts evaluations as required by Hospital policies and state and federal regulations and standards. * Provides medical clinic leadership under the direction of the Medical Director. * Consults with other internal and external professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and attorneys as needed to make patient care decisions. *Primary Care Physician is compensated for after hours on-call coverage 1. Unit and Hospital Treatment Team Functions: 10% * Carries out other appropriate duties as requested by the Medical Director. * Serves on Hospital committees as assigned by the Medical Director or the Hospital Administrator. * Participates in, and provides for other staff, continuing education and training programs. * Maintains liaison communication with community physicians, mental health professionals, and drug/ alcohol programs. *Physical and Environmental Demands:Must be able to work closely with patients. The incumbent makes regular visits to various work environments throughout the hospital including residences, and patient units which may subject the individual to unpredictable patient behaviors. The position requires standing, walking, and sitting to perform the essential duties. Must be willing to go to all on-campus patient care units. Must be willing to adjust working schedule to ensure coverage. Telework: This position is not eligible for telework arrangements. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Behaviors): Required for the first day of work: * General practice of medicine for adults and geriatric patients and of the use of consultative resources in the practice of medicine * Basic understanding of the major psychiatric diagnoses and how the diagnosis may interrelate with medical symptoms and illnesses * Basic understanding of the use of the common psychotherapeutic agents and of the statutory requirements relating to the practice of medicine. * Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people * Excellent communication skills Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience): * Graduate education up through and including a residency in family practice, internal medicine, or another general medical specialty. * Licensure as a physician in the State of Montana.
