POSITION PURPOSE:
Excavator Operators are responsible for operating equipment to excavate bulk materials, trench, move soil, rock, vegetation and debris and then smooth and compact surfaces on construction sites, civil construction projects and infrastructure projects.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment.
Preparing and positioning for operation on site.
Operate the machine and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
Selecting, fitting, and removing attachments such as buckets, compactors, or rock breaking hammers.
Work safely with ground personnel.
Working from drawings, markers, and verbal instructions.
Servicing, lubricating, cleaning, and refueling equipment and performing minor adjustments and repairs.
Work closely around structures, other heavy equipment, or existing site appurtenances.
Trenching for pipe installation, placing precast structures, backfill, site restoration.
Lifting, carrying, and skillfully placing materials, structures, or supplies.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and Experience:
High Diploma or equivalent
Experience in construction field work.
Minimum five (5) years of experience as an equipment operator (CAT 323 excavator or comparable.) on construction sites.
Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of heavy equipment operations.
To include but not limited to reading Grade Stakes and performing equipment daily inspections and identifying maintenance needs.
General knowledge of construction materials and processes
To include but not limited to identifying differing materials and their place within the project site.
Strong Communication skills
Excellent hand, eye and foot coordination
Attention to detail
Must be able to climb onto and up and down a machine several times a day.
Must be able to sit in a machine and operate it for several hours without stopping.
Must withstand vibration from track and job site conditions as well as noise from other equipment.
Must be able to use arms, hands, and feet in repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform manual duties, such as placing paint drums on the vehicle.
QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED:
More than five (5) years of experience as an excavator operator
Experience working on steep slopes
Experience with trenching, benching, shoring, placing bedding, craning and placing pipe, placing backfill, and working around existing utilities.
Ability to regularly perform within a +/- 0.1 foot tolerance
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must pass pre-employment background check
Must pass pre-employment drug screening

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach and signal with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 60 pounds.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
A typical day for an excavator operator is spent on a construction site in conditions that can be unpredictable; for example, working conditions may be noisy, cold, hot and dusty.
